How to use essential oils on your period

Just when you thought I couldn’t be any more of a massive hippie, here I am writing a post about the benefits of using essential oils whilst on your period. Someone get me a sarong and teach me how to do a headstand.

Listen, I know it sounds crazy, but Feminax and a hot water bottle aren’t the only things that can help you when Mother Nature pops around for a visit. Over the past couple of months, I’ve been trying out these pure essential oils from Tender Essence and they’ve been working some kind of magic. The company encourages people to learn about the products that they’re putting onto their skin, which, after my rant about pads and tampons, you guys know I’m all about. So, I absolutely jumped at the opportunity to test out their 8 most popular oils. Not only did this little collection encourage me to try out ones I wasn’t even sure how to pronounce, but it made my room smell like a yoga studio. Win-win!

After a little bit of research into the amazing hormonal benefits of certain essential oils, I felt totally inspired to get my DIY on (this is me we’re talking about though guys, they’re all super easy) and create some products to help keep me sane whilst I’m on my period.

If you don’t want to take the plunge straight away, all of the oils are also available individually for way cheaper than you’ll find in other health shops (I’m looking at you, Holland and Barret), so those will be linked in the DIYs below. 

Tea Tree steam

Considering you’re probably already in a pretty crappy mood, the last thing you need when you’re on your period is spots having a party on your face. So, when you’re due on, go for a classic steam facial with a tea tree twist. All you have to do is boil some water and put it in a large bowl (is this the bit where a warning about having adult help comes across the bottom of the screen?) with an extra 3 to 5 drops of tea tree oil. Then just place your face above the bowl with a towel over your shoulders and head to stop steam escaping.

By the time you’re finished, your pores will be clear of dirt and face demons will be kept at bay.

Ylang Ylang Burner

Ylang ylang is basically a miracle oil as far as mood is concerned. Not only does it balance hormones, it promotes healthy skin and hair and has a calming influence when sniffed too. Since we need all the help we can get when PMS rears its ugly head, I thought it was important to use this oil in as pure a way as possible. During my last period, I used my oil burner to make my whole room feel like a relaxing haven. Just fill the top of the burner with water and then add about three drops of this gorgeous oil. Maybe it was a placebo, but it definitely had me feeling less likely to punch anyone! I’ve also seen suggestions that bergamot, grapefruit, and ylang ylang mix well for a “joyful” scent, all of which come in this set of 8.

Lavender sleep spray

With cramps and PMS stress plaguing you, sleep can seem like a bit of a myth when you’re on your period, even though that’s probably when you need it most. Lavender is well known for its relaxing and sleep inducing properties, which is why I decided to take inspiration from the girls at A Beautiful Mess and make a lavender sleep spray. This stuff smells absolutely scrumptious and makes snuggling down a lot easier.

I used an old Lush spray bottle for my DIY, but you can just as easily buy them in Boots or online. Try to go for a dark colour though, as this will stop the UV rays in the sun from breaking down the oils. Simply put 20 drops of lavender and 15 drops of orange oil in the bottle and then fill the rest with water.

Bergamot massage oil

All you need for this DIY is coconut oil, bergamot oil and a willing partner/friend/family member/pet. We all know that back ache is a bitch during that time of the month, which is why you need this gorgeous massage oil in your life. Much like pure coconut oil, it’s solid at room temperature but warms up when on the skin, making it super soothing. Simply mix a cup of raw coconut oil with 5 to 8 drops of bergamot oil and then store in a sealable container to crack open every month whenever you can drag someone into rubbing your back.

    I've never heard of using essential oils for periods before, but this is fascinating! Particularly the ylang ylang. I need something to make me less likely to want to punch someone when PMS takes over. Thanks for the suggestions! Amber | y a c h t s m a a n
